Monstera ( මොන්ස්ටෙරා )

Monstera deliciosa, the Hurricane or Swiss Cheese Plant are all names for an old fashioned but favorite houseplant for many. Look closely at the Latin name (Monstera deliciosa) and play around with it a little and you get “Delicious Monster”.

While it’s not at all delicious on the account of its leaves being poisonous, it really is a monster – in size.There’s no getting around the fact, while lovely and incredibly easy to care for, it needs space and will roar for it should you not give enough. This houseplant is not for the window sill or small flat.

Flower : composed of a special bract called a spathe enclosing a spadix and the inflorescences are adorned with a cream-white spathe uniform, velvety appearance, covering, like a hood, a yellowish white spike 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in) high and about 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter.

Fruit : up to 25 cm (9.8 in) long and 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) diameter, looking like a green ear of maize covered with hexagonal scales.

Edible parts : Ripe Fruit

Ayurvedic usage : Mainly used as an ornamental plant. The aerial roots have been used as ropes in Peru, and to make baskets in Mexico.In Mexico, a leaf or root infusion is drunk daily to relieve arthritis. In Martinique the root is used to make a remedy for snake bite.

Height : 2m -3m and can even grow up to 20 m (66 ft)
